Open Question: How to tell my friend I hate the city we moved to together and that i'm going back home?

So me, my "best friend", and my other friend moved to CA from the Midwest. I thought I would love this city(San Francisco) but really I hate it. My best friend got a place where she doesn't have to spend any money and is saving her money, me and my other friend can't stay there so we are living at a hostel. We've been here for two months and both me and the friend have begun to realize that she is a bit manipulative. We've met so many interesting foreigners at this hostel and we want to go back home, save up money, and go backpacking through Europe. We originally came here(me and the other friend) to go to college but we hate the idea of staying here for four years. How do we tell her that we're leaving? We've been getting very distant and i'm starting to realize that we're not compatible anymore. We saved up before we came here and she came here with $400 and we've payed her part of the rent(we had an apartment for a month), her part of the deposit, meals(at restaurants). And she doesn't appreciate it. Please help. I know her mom and I honestly don't want to leave her alone because what then would I say to her mom about me leaving? But at the same time, we have to go. I hate everything about this place and the only thing keeping me from leaving is telling her. If I told her today and she was somehow okay with it, I would leave tomorrow. Seriously. Oh.
